CHAPA
The Project Aims
To hold weekly healthy cooking and physical activity groups for people with diabetes or a heart problem to improve their well-being, increase their fitness, healthy eating and cooking skills.Participants
CHAPA program is for people with diabetes and or a cardiac condition who want to attend and can commit to attend the 10 week program. Joining the CHAPA service research project is voluntary and you can choose to be part of the research or you can decline if you do not wish to take part in the project. You can still be part of the group even if you decline to the research. An interpreter will be offered as needed to help with understanding this information sheet and the consent form.Being a participant involves
- Being part of the 10 week group who will meet 2 times a week for easy exercises and walking. One session a week after the exercise there will be a healthy food session with cooking and tasting healthy food.
- The exercise will be safe, easy and changed to suit your needs when needed by the Accredited Exercise Physiologist. The cooking and healthy eating sessions will be run by the Dietician
- There will also be two sessions by the psychologist to help you with goal setting and making changes that will help keep you healthy.
- To measure changes to your understanding, activity levels and health a series of tests will be undertaken at the start and end of the 10 week course.
- You will be asked to attend a follow up assessment six weeks after the end of the course. This follow up will check your health and fitness levels. You will be told of your results at the end of each fitness and health test and will get a written copy at the end of the 10 week program.

Based on the results of previous groups, participants have improved their fitness, health and well being and understanding of food. Doing every day activities will also be easier and you will be less tired.
Funding was received from an Australian Government to deliver four 10 week cooking and exercise groups. The outcomes, improvements, and feedback from the first two groups were very good. We decided to publish about the group, the findings and results from the third and fourth groups in interested health journals. By publishing about the groups other health professionals and health teams can learn from us to develop their own program. Your results and privacy will be protected and no one will know were part of the group.
Extra information
The risk to you in the CHAPA program is low. You may have some discomfort whilst performing the various exercises, but this is normal when you start any new physical activity. The accredited exercise physiologist will watch and help you and other group members with all the physical activity sessions.Every attempt will be made to maintain your privacy. The data to be collected from you will be non-identifiable in nature and will include photographic images being taken. This data will include your contact details and details regarding your diabetes or heart problem. The results will only be used to show the group’s changes as a whole. Any photos of you will only be used to promote the CHAPA program; photos may be in local magazines, newspapers or health journals. Any images of you will only be used as part of this project and will not be used out of any other reason. Data from you in this project may be used for similar research purposes. Your information will stay non-identifiable and your privacy will be protected. All information collected will be stored safely for five years before being destroyed.
