What is Pilates?
Pilates is a blend of eastern and western philosophies thatuse both the mind and the body to re-align and strengthen the body. Pilatesfocuses on strengthening the ‘powerhouse’ or ‘core’ muscles such as theabdominal, gluteal and spinal muscles whose role is to support and stabilisethe pelvis and spine. Pilates starts by learning how to stabilise the pelvisand spine and then progresses onto exercises involving controlled range ofmotion of the trunk and limbs. Lastly Pilates encourages participant’s tomaintain good posture, breathe correctly and includes stretching exercises toelongate and lengthen the muscles.
Why should i include Pilates in my fitness regime?
Firstly Pilates uses a holistic approach to improving one’sfitness by not only focusing on increasing muscular strength and endurance butalso focusing on establishing and maintaining good posture, focusing one’s mindon movement and employing good breathing techniques. By focusing one’sattention Pilates provides a distraction to life’s stresses and has been foundto be effective in relieving tension. Secondly Pilates can enhance performanceof other exercise modalities such as running and weight lifting by increasingefficiency of movement. This means you can lift more reps, lift heavierweights, run faster and further before fatiguing and therefore gain furtheradaptations in your training program. Thirdly Pilates has been found to be anexcellent rehabilitation and injury prevention system for the back, knee, hips,shoulders and repetitive-stress injuries by increasing strength and enduranceof the ‘powerhouse’ muscles which support and stabilise the skeleton. Lastly anumber of benefits have been scientifically proven in recent studies regardingthe benefits of Pilates in a number of populations. These include:

What should i bring?
For your comfort and convenience Bodyfit NT provides refrigeratedwater, towels and mats. Dress in comfortable clothing that allows you to movefreely. Clothing such as leggings, bike shorts or long fitted gym pants and afitted t-shirt or tank is suitable. Classes are undertaken barefoot or in afresh pair of socks.
