What does a Dietitian do?
Accredited Practising Dietitians (APDs) are qualified to provide expert nutrition and dietary advice. They are the recognised professionals that can help you sort through the maze of nutrition information. APDs will often distinguish themselves with the logo to the right.
APDs are qualified to provide nutrition and dietetic advice to individuals and groups. They have clinical training to modify diets to treat conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, cancers, gastro-intestinal diseases, food allergies and intolerances and overweight and obesity.
APDs translate scientific information about nutrition into practical advice about what to eat. They can:
• Assess people's nutritional needs
• Develop personalised eating plans and nutritional guidelines
• Provide information on:
• Healthy eating
• Reading food labels
• Choosing the best foods when shopping and eating out
• Healthy ways to prepare food.
• Help you sort through nutrition fact and fiction
Individual Consultations
Individual consultations allow you the opportunity to discuss your individual health concerns and negotiate relevant goals.
At an individual consultation your medical and nutritional needs, eating habits, food preferences and lifestyle can all be assessed before recommendations are made. Your social, occupational and psychological needs can also be taken into consideration.
Private Health Insurance
If you have private health insurance with ‘extras’ cover you may be eligible for a rebate. Rebate amounts vary widely and you should check with your fund if you are entitled. We offer HICAPS facilities enabling you to claim a rebate from your private health insurance on the spot.
Medicare Enhanced Primary Care Plan
People with chronic conditions and complex care needs may be eligible for an Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) plan. If your GP has referred you for dietary services and completed an EPC referral form, Medicare can then provide a rebate for up to five consultations. Only those with a chronic condition are eligible for the plan – discuss eligibility with your GP. Please bring the EPC referral to your appointment.
Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA)
Those with a DVA Gold Card can receive dietetic services at no additional cost. However, you must be referred to the dietitian by your GP. Please bring any relevant paperwork to your appointment.
